Summative Entry of Australian Literature

What insights has your study of Australian Literature and Art given you into the importance of creativity as part of human experience?

The human experience throughout the years has been grief, destruction, loss but also happiness, joy and creativity. During my studies this semester, I have learned a lot about the human experience and the creativity behind it. Throughout this unit, ENGL102: Australian Literature; An Introduction, certain artworks, poems and other forms of literature have helped better shape my understanding of the human experience.

Creativity is an important part of the human experience and through landscape painting, such as “Fire’s on’ Lapstone Tunnel” by Arthur Streeton. This painting shows just how much destruction has happened to humanity and to the land itself. This painting shows a dramatic event at the time as a man had just died in an incident inside the tunnel and was being escorted out on a stretcher. The landscape of painting shows exactly how throughout the years man has made destruction to the environment.

Throughout this unit, all of the Australian Literature we have looked at shows a very rich history of Australia, what has happened to it over the years as well as the meaning of the texts. This unit has shown me the meanings behind texts or pieces of art, showing me how a piece of creativity is so important to the human experience. Whether it’s either to understand the history of our country or to gain a different perspective on what had happened, creativity has shown me a lot in this unit.
